Located in a 1926 English Tudor home near Buffalo, N.Y., this European kitchen is the product of a complete gut and remodel. What was once a cramped eat-in room needed to be converted into a warm, inviting space for friends and family. The homeowners' number one request: an island to accommodate multiple cooks and a spot to gather for entertaining. A doorway and a half-wall opposite the sink, however, left no clearance for traffic and made the addition of an island seem nearly impossible.

To solve the problem, Artisan Kitchens and Baths relocated the obstructive doorways and removed the half-wall, replacing it with a wrought iron rail. We relocated the eating area into what was previously the den; the room features a custom light fixture by Macalusso's Ironworks.

These measures generated new traffic clearance and created an open aesthetic, which allowed for an elegant, generous island. To incorporate professional-grade appliances without overwhelming the space, products were selected with great care. The professional range and glassfront refrigerator were highlighted while concealing the dishwasher, compactor and hood behind matching cabinet fronts. Additional design elements include custom countertop supports by Macalusso’s Ironworks, a built-in countertop microwave and ceramic tile flooring and backsplash.
